Refrigeration systems

Refrigeration systems are classified by size and type of plants.

Simple cold rooms, cold counters or refrigerated showcases
Usually it refers to an outside air-cooled refrigerator and an evaporator placed in the cold room. This system works at positive temperature up to +1°C (gar R134a) and negative temperature down to -24°C (gas R404a), removing heat from the environment. Therefore, the temperature is lowered to a limit set by the thermostat and the product to be cooled.

Exemples:
Wine cellars

Game larders
Cheese cold rooms
Catafalque carrying cases
Freezer chambers
Chilled display cases for bakeries, pastry and butcher shops
Refrigerated showcases for shops

Refrigeration equipment and cold rooms for restaurants or hotels

This type of units is constructed with a centralized cooling plant, placed in a special room, consisting of more than one compressors, the latter depending on the needs are switched on or off. The refrigerant gas R134a is used up to the temperature of +1°C.

Gas R404a is used for the negative part down to -24°C, which is as a rule composed of one or two compressors. Normally, it refers to a few refrigeration cells or a kitchen unit.

This kind of equipment allows the recovery of heat generated by cooling and combines cooling power and electric power for the compressors. The recovered heat serves mainly for heating sanitary water up to 65°C in a special container (boiler) and, in particular cases, for water heaters, etc.

Showcases and cold rooms for a super- or hypermarket

This type of plants is the one that has undergone most changes thanks to the growing environmental awareness in recent years. There has been developed a plant using carbon dioxide (CO2). This refrigerant had already been known in the field of refrigeration for more than 100 years, but had some limitations related to its high pressure. For example, at 25°C we already have the pressure of 53 bars. However. thanks to technological advances in materials and components of the cooling industry, these technical constraints have been overcome.

Our company is the only one in Ticino to be able to plan, build and put in use such a system. Usually, there is a "Booster" type facility. Negative compressors compress the positive unit in aspiration. The machine is installed in a utility room equipped with gas detectors. CO2 in the liquid form and at different pressures "feeds" various places of cooling and, owing to evaporation, produces cold (removes heat).

Like in conventional plants, the heat available is used for the production of sanitary water or hot water for heating systems. Excessive heat is transferred to the air, however, since the critical point of CO2 is +28°C, our systems work above the critical point, then we speak of transcritical plants.

Large cold rooms for the distribution or storage of products

Cold storage rooms of large dimensions can be cooled with a refrigeration plant that produces cold water glycoled to -7/-8°C, This water is pumped into various heat excangers installed in these cells. So, such a system allows energy recovery according to the customer's requirements.
Otherwise, with the advent of carbon dioxide (CO2) these plants also can be constructed without great difficulties using this type of refrigerant, as in the case of supermarkets.

Examples:
Cold rooms for the preservation and storage of fruits and vegetables

Cold rooms for the distribution of different alimentaries: ice cream, dairy products, etc.
